this is not the consolatory obama that came in january 2011 with that need that he knew he was chasing. that he was going to have to work together with the republicans. a somewhat toned down barack obama from the 2012 state of the union trying to talk to the voters, set the tone for the campaign. he wanted to deliver this. hey, guys, we have to do some of these votes. i wonder, they have a lot of what i would call very well pull tests. the issue that they hit on on education and the economy in particular, things like universal prepaid, raising the minimum wage, these are tangible items that average, middle-class families listening to this , speech. i have a feeling that could resonate very well. they accomplish what they wanted to do, which is talk about the economy in simpler terms over the head of washington. >> chuck todd, thank you for joining us. >> all right. >> joining us from san antonio, texas, the mayor of san antonio. mayor castro, thank you for joining us. >> let me ask you about the word comprehensive. we have all been if through watching the attempt by the government to reform immigration

tomorrow night, have a good night. the union address. welcome to special coverage of president obama's fourth state of the union address, the first state of the union of his second term. earlier today, house speaker john boehner predicted the highly partisan speech and said this president doesn't have the guts to go against his liberal base. those two men will be facing each other shortly and just coming in now, the cabinet, as you see right now, secretary of state john kerry newly appointed to that position. obviously, the former democratic candidate for president, also former senator from massachusetts, now the new secretary of state. behind him secretary of defense, leon panetta who will be leaving, although chuck hagel is on the hot seat right now. he was approved out of the senate armed services committee partisan vote, 14-11 today, but the senate floor, a full vote expected sometime later this week and you see the rest of the cabinet filing in behind those two men. ed henry, chief white house correspondent is standing by on the north lawn. ed? >> reporter: and here at the white

. obama is trying to advance his most ambitious legislative agenda since his first year in office, on the heels of a re-election victory. the country just doubled down on obama's agenda, which isn't something the president could have said even at his peak of popularity in early 2009. mike murphy, that's the backdrop. how do you see his approach? >> well, i'm a critic of it, and i hope he changes it with the state of the union for this reason. there's no doubt he won fair and square. 66 million votes. but 61 million people voted to fire him. and about 230 congressional districts, those incumbents don't care about emails from the president and michelle. he has to get out of the way of immigration or the deal will blow up. and the republicans in the short-term have the politics to hunker down. in the mid term elections, some of the senate races are in places where the president is unpopular. so the path he started on, which was i've got a very broad agenda and i'm going to still keep a campaign style thing of pressuring you won't work with these guys, and that will result in gridlock
